Information: Asheron's Call 2: The Vault Campaigns
- Welcome! Welcome to my dusty little hovel my friend! Oh don't worry, I accept it for what it is: a hovel. Not much more than a rough assemblage of ruins and rough planks to cover the holes. Sit, sit! Put those papers over on that table there. Mind that it only has 3 legs! Living in the ruins of a civilization is a challenge sometimes. Ah but I sense you are one of those who will make these lands ours again! What can this ancient scribe and scholar do for you today?
You are curious about the Vaults my friend? What they are? A good question, good question! The Vaults are a topic worthy of much study, for they are probably the most important sites in all of Dereth. The surviving texts from our ancestors say that they were the cause of their defeat, and may be the key to our victory! Let me tell you what I know of them:
The Vaults were discovered in the waning days of our ancestors' Golden Age. It is said that Asheron found them, and meant to tap into their power. For they do contain great power. Why it is whispered that they are the most ancient constructs found on this planet! In the center of each Vault is a great crystalline shard, enormous currents of power flowing through it. One text I have here, where is it...oh, hmm, must have been in that pile you moved, no matter, I remember what is written there. It mentions that these Shards were found throughout Dereth, some buried in chambers far below the surface of the ground, while others were found in the swirling maelstrom of Portalspace! Incredible isn't it?
If we could but reach the shards, perhaps we could gain some insight into what calamity ended the Golden Age, but breaching the Vaults won't be easy. Oh no, not easy at all. Great vestibules and twisting labyrinths protect the shards. Perhaps these halls and corridors were constructed by the Great Ones, like Asheron, or perhaps they are much, much older. Such mysteries await us out there! So many unknowns! But beware if you enter these halls, for they are infested with creatures. Some were familiar to our ancestors, while others are new and terrible, with the spitting acid, the razor sharp claws, the dark magics and the whatnot...I shudder to think of what you might see.
Even finding the Vaults will be a test of your determination. They are scattered across the landscape on the three separate islands that used to make up old Dereth. Now before you go running off to find the entrances, you should know that they are protected. Why, you can't even pass through the portals into them without a Glyph! You'll have to search the land for these Glyphs, although usually the creatures inside have given some to their weaker cousins outside, probably so they can bring them food. Have you ever seen a Drudge eat? Disgusting sight, one I won't soon forget. Filthy creatures! I've always said that it is table manners that separate us from the lesser creatures.
Oh, here I am going on about table manners and I see I've forgot to mention something very important! Be careful when you get a Glyph, because each one can only be used once and will only allow you to enter the Vault that it is attuned to. Now, my young friend, I'd like to offer you a bit of advice. I'd recommend getting a party of your fellow adventurers together before you even try to enter the Vault portal, for even if you defeat the creatures infesting the outer reaches of the Vault, the final portal to the Shard is protected by the creatures' master. Why one young person, like you, told me that they had encountered a Drudge Warlord protecting the final portal that led to the Shard. The Warlord had a mighty hammer, and after just a few blows the poor fool found himself awaking up at his Lifestone. Don't be like him, young |
